The first calls for CEF Digital managed by HaDEA will be launched in early January 2022 and will cover the following areas:

• 5G coverage along transport corridors
• 5G for Smart Communities
• Backbone networks for pan-European cloud federations
• Backbone connectivity for Digital Global Gateways
• Programme Support Actions for Operational Digital Platforms and 5G connectivity infrastructures.

Hosted from 26^th to 27^th January 2022 in the evocative setting of Villa Griffone, home of Guglielmo Marconi and cradle of wireless communications, the event counted over 1.000 telecommunications experts from industry and SMEs.

The focus of the 2-day-conference was to deepen and discuss the scenarios and opportunities of the 5G universe: the technology that revolutionizes the way we live, communicate, and do business. In this context, the running research and demos of Affordable 5G were presented together with the outcomes of other 5G-PPP projects.

Overall, participants had the opportunity to listen to the speeches of the 45 speakers and ask them questions to learn about the challenges, the main business cases, and all the news of the Private 5G world.

The deployment of high-capacity networks and connectivity infrastructures, in particular Gigabit and 5G networks, is crucial to lead the Union towards an inclusive digital transformation. To achieve this goal, the digital part of the Connecting European Facility (CEF Digital) programme will allocate a budget of €258 million in funding.

Application Details

CEF Digital calls are mainly open to entities, including joint ventures, established in Member States and overseas countries or territories. Supported by the UN’s specialized agency for ICTs, the ITU Digital World 2021 SME Awards recognize the most promising innovative tech solutions with real-world social impact. Finalists are selected based on innovative use of ICTs, business model, scalability and environmental sustainability. RunEL was shortlisted under the Connectivity category, which awards innovative solutions to increasing universal access to the Internet.

Finalists will go head-to-head in live online pitching and winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on 1 December in the presence of the ITU Secretary-General, Houlin Zhao.

Affordable5G’s partners Nemergent Solutions and Athonet attended the TCCA’S Critical Communications World 2021, which took place in Madrid, from November 3 – 5. The event stands out as the world’s leading critical communications conference and exhibition, where the major professionals, operators and stakeholders meet to discover, compare, and source cutting-edge technology in the field.

The event featured a wide range of conference and masterclass sessions, delivered by some of the most respected critical communications experts from across the world. The discussed topics ongoing national roll-outs of broadband for critical communications, the evolution of the TETRA standard and much more.

Nemergent Solutions and Athonet hosted two booths to present their latest tech demos on 5G private networks and share the developments of the EU funded research and innovation projects they are involved in, such as Affordable5G.

As reported by Athonet, the solutions for private networking and critical communication presented attracted the attention of experts from Europe, Asia and South America who visited their booth. There was a lot of interest in European projects as well, highlighting that cooperation among continental stakeholders is the right way forward.

In the context of Affordable5G, inCITES will investigate the business perspective of the provided solutions. inCITES will mainly participate in the exploitation activities of Affordable5G project by contributing to market and technoeconomic analysis, and through drafting of business models.
