The workshop will be open to all interested 5G constituencies, including inter alia manufacturers and suppliers, telecom operators, national authorities in charge of telecom and spectrum policy and regulation, as well as representatives of the vertical industries looking at the use of 5G for relevant use cases.

The European 5G Observatory (https://5gobservatory.eu) was launched in September 2018 to monitor market developments and preparatory actions taken by industry stakeholders and Member States in the context of 5G roll-out in Europe and beyond. Its current focus is on the monitoring of the state of play regarding the remaining 5G Action Plan targets related to spectrum assignments and service deployments, together with the new Digital Decade targets and other specific indicators to be monitored.

This event will be an opportunity to exchange views on the current state of play of 5G deployment, the latest market trends and global developments.

The morning session will concentrate on what has been achieved, how the 5G AP targets have been fulfilled so far, and what have we learned now that 5G is reality in almost all EU Member States.

The early afternoon session will be about 5G in the Digital Decade, considering issues like the prospects towards the ‘full 5G’ target, what could complementary targets be, e.g. for vertical sectors, and how to measure deployment progress and quality.

Further information and registration are available here.

The policy seminar on ‘Next generation of human-AI/robot systems – what role for policy?’ is part of a series of 8 policy seminars organised within the Advanced Technologies for Industry (ATI) project commissioned by EISMEA and the European Commission – DG GROW. The project provides a systematic monitoring of technological trends and reliable, up-to-date data on advanced technologies to properly support the implementation of policies and initiatives and finally promote a competitive European industry.

Research and innovation policies across Europe are actively promoting the development of AI and robotics technologies. Beyond unfolding the potential in these technologies, policy will also need to play an important role to prepare the future workforce for the upcoming changes and mitigate the less beneficial societal and ethical related consequences of automation and human-machine interactions. Successful technological transformation has various challenges that will have to be addressed both by policy and change in industrial behaviour including trustworthy technology, qualifications, change management and organisation, safety and occupational health, liability and ethical behaviour. In this context, the online policy seminar will aim to:

  • present the ATI analysis on human-robot and human AI systems and policy implications
  • identify challenges not yet addressed and point out at policy gaps
  • develop recommendations how to improve policy.

The Leading the Digital Decade conference, hosted by the European Commission and the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, will be held virtually on 1 and 2 June 2021.

The starting point of the first day’s debate is the Communication “2030 Digital Compass: the European way for the Digital Decade”. Its vision is simple: everyone in Europe can and should benefit from digital.

The second day will be dedicated to the launch of the Digital Europe Programme, the first financial instrument of the EU for European projects on digital.

Two of the highlights of this event will be the presentation of the Lisbon Declaration, a contribution to the preparation of a proposal from the European Commission for a joint inter-institutional Declaration of Digital Principles, and the inauguration of the EllaLink submarine cable, which will be retransmitted from the cable’s site in Sines, south of Lisbon. This cable will offer high-capacity connectivity on a new route linking major subsea hubs in Europe and Latin America.

A detailed programme will soon be available here: Leading the Digital Decade 2021 website, and you can already register here.

The virtual Next-Generation IoT and Edge Computing Strategy Forum aims at gathering top technology experts from across several digital and vertical domains, as well as corporate-strategy level representatives to exchange views on priorities, challenges and opportunities, and establish a commonly shared strategic European vision for the next-generation IoT and (far) edge computing. With its medium-term time perspective, this initiative is part of the implementation of the European data and cloud strategy, and will be supported by a research and innovation theme on Cloud-to-Edge-to-IoT under the first Work Programme of Horizon Europe.

This workshop is part of the thematic workshop series organised by Next Generation IoT (NGIoT). The workshops are hosted by NGIoT and EU-Iot projects together with the European Commission + relevant associations, networks, projects and organisations.

The objective of these thematic workshops is to mobilise the community in anticipation of the upcoming Horizon Europe and Digital Europe programmes, and to consolidate priorities from the communities of stakeholders in a roadmap for Europe (the main objective for NGIoT), both relating to technologies and with respect to supporting the range of relevant policies, including the green deal.

The afternoon of 30 March 2021 will be dedicated to presentations and discussions in the domain of agrifood and rural smart communities. The workshop will bring together the visions on smart communities from several associations and projects: Living-in.EU, AURORAL and dRural and the more sectoral aspects DEMETER, ATLAS, IoF2020 and SmartAgriHubs.

The economy of rural smart communities in Europe is a key focus area for the European Commission, both short-term in securing equal access to connectivity and services and as part of the long-term vision for rural areas. As the pandemic has shown, the rural areas are surging in popularity for both short- and long-term relocation. At the same time, rural areas are linked to urban areas, through people, economy, territory – and food.
