Recently, the research community and the standardisation bodies have started to discuss what the Sixth-Generation (6G) of wireless communications should be. It is envisioned that 6G mobile communications revolution the communication sector by proposing novel communication paradigms, and novel uses to connect not only people or devices -as in 5G- but providing the network with intelligence able to identify, localise or sense their environment.

Novel antenna designs should be envisioned for 6G systems, as they should operate at higher frequencies and different environments. Besides, they should interact with a great diversity of materials and should be low-cost and sustainable for massive production. In this line, novel antennas using low-cost materials and advanced manufacturing techniques have been investigated in the last years, and some interesting solutions have been recently proposed. Metasurfaces, intelligent reflective surfaces (IRS) and smart lenses can be found as promising candidates for the next generation systems at the 6G radio interface. Additive manufacturing techniques like inkjet-printing or 3D printing in novel materials, together with advanced technologies for wave guiding in 6G have recently attracted increased interest for the new systems. As the systems increase their operating frequency, several challenges arise from the fabrication and the antenna design. In this context, the availability of materials whose complex permittivity can be engineered for an optimal design of 6G devices and applications pays also an important role.

The 2022 EuCNC & 6G Summit builds on putting together two successful conferences in the area of telecommunications: EuCNC (European Conference on Networks and Communications), supported by the European Commission, and the 6G Summit, originated from the 6G Flagship programme in Finland, one of the very first in its area. The conference is sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society and by the European Association for Signal Processing, and focuses on all aspects of telecommunications ranging from 5G deployment and mobile IoT to 6G exploration and future communications systems and networks, including experimentation and testbeds, and applications and services. It brings together cutting-edge research and world-renown industries and businesses, globally attracting in the last years more than 1 300 delegates from more than 40 countries all over the world, to present and discuss the latest results, and an exhibition with more than 70 exhibitors, for demonstrating the technology developed in the area, namely within research projects from EU R&I programmes.

Affordable5G will be present with a booth on the event’s exhibition floor, in collaboration with fellow EU-funded project FUDGE-5G – Come visit us at booth 39!

The 2021 Joint EuCNC & 6G Summit, initiated this year, builds on putting together two successful conferences in the area of telecommunications: EuCNC, in its 30th edition of a series, supported by the European Commission; the 6G Summit, in its 3rd edition, originated from the 6G Flagship programme in Finland, one of the very first in its area.

RunEL, funded in March 2015, is carving its way to be a technology leader in the 5G mobile wireless revolution. The company vision is improving life experience by connecting people and things using superior technology. Its mission is to introduce the revolutionary Sparq-2020 chipset for 5G infrastructure (O-RU and O-DU), that will become a significant player in Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC).

RunEL consists of a team of mobile communication experts that invented and pioneered the OFDMA technology back in the 2000-2006 timeframe and introduced it to the standards, in order to become the physical layer basis of the 4th Generation LTE and WiMAX cellular networks of today. The team is now reinforced by young and talented researchers, in order to maintain its technological leadership in the OFDMA field and to lead the way towards the 5th Generation revolution.

RunEL is an active member in five 5G consortiums – WIN (funded by the Israel Innovation Authority) and IoRL, 5 Genesis, Affordable 5G and 6G Brains (funded by the European Union) – in which the company is collaborating with numerous other firms and research institutes in the development and promotion of 5G generic technologies. In addition, RunEL is currently developing an AI-based Scheduler under the Innovation Authority’s Magnet Star project, and a MM Wave 5G Remote Radio Head under the Bird Foundation.

The company is targeting several markets with its family of products and its disrupting SoC solution, including 5G equipment vendors, integrators, OEMs, URLLC vertical market system integrators, FPGA vendors, vertical operators and cellular operators.

In the specific context of the Affordable5G project, RunEL will provide its O-RU to the two testbeds in Malaga and Barcelona. The O-RU will be at 3.5GHz band, will interconnect northbound with the Eurecom DU, and will provide access via 5G air interface to commercial UE terminals.
