In early June, Affordable5G was among the organizers and features of the “5G Private Networks” workshop – in collaboration with other 5G-focused projects (FUDGE-5G, 5G-VINNI, 5G-RECORDS, 5GROWTH, 5G-CLARITY, 5G-SMART, 5G-TOURS, 5G-INDUCE, 5G-Solutions, 5G-VICTORI, PriMO-5G) – which was part of the online programme of the fully virtual EuCNC/6G Summit.

All the 12 projects involved – all belonging to the 5G-PPP initiative’s cluster – provided a holistic view of NPNs, covering vertical use cases, operation aspects, business models, trials and emerging technologies. Affordable5G’s presentation is available, in full, here below:

Later in the same month, the project made its first comeback to physical events, with two consortium partners (Nearby Computing and i2CAT) on the floor of Mobile World Congress 2021, presenting Affordable5G to a broader audience of potential stakeholders.

In the context of MWC, Affordable5G partner Ubiwhere, also held a virtual presentation of their City Nervous System concept, which envisions cities as living organisms, generating information and reacting to such input autonomously (discover more here).

The activation of the City Nervous System takes advantage of the development of the 5G network and the technologies for its deployment, such as edge computing and neutral hosting, combining everything in a single platform and accelerating the generation of intelligence in cities.

The Ubiwhere team will take you on a journey about all the technology, strategies and on-the-field implementations on the basis of this concept.

Their vast experience with scalable software architectures powers the creation of innovative solutions handling multimodal data collection, analysis and visualisation. They promote a more sustainable world, with a higher quality of life for citizens, responding to the evolution of technology and networks of the future and strengthening urban services management.

Ubiwhere will contribute to Affordable5G with the definition and implementation of the Smart Cities use case, leading the system integration and the pilot. The use case will be implemented with two of Ubiwhere’s most promising products: Smartlamppost and Urban Platform.

It includes cell densification, Remote Units/Distributed Units/Central Units RU/DU/CU split, hardware acceleration, edge computing and core network virtualization, seamlessly combined with the adoption of open solutions, such as O-RAN (Radio Access Network), MEC (Mobile Edge Computing) and open source MANO (Management and Orchestration) solutions, for cloud-native, micro-service deployments. The solution will be evaluated and validated in two vertical pilots related to emergency communications and smart cities.

Affordable5G gathers 17 partners from 10 European countries (Spain, Greece, Belgium, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Luxemburg, Cyprus, and France) and Israel who will work together for 2 years.

The Affordable5G consortium is a truly, multidisciplinary consortium, encompassing major industrial companies, SMEs and Research Institutions and Universities.
It brings together two large industrial service provider Partners: Atos, Cellnex and one big vendor: ADVA. They will transfer the Affordable5G results into provisioned services and products.

Part of the consortium are also 10 innovative SMEs: Martel, Accelleran, Athonet, Think Silicon, Ubiwhere, RunEL, Nemergent, 8bells, InCites and Nearby Computing; 4 Research Institutes and Universities: Malaga University, National & Kapodistrian University Of Athens, Fundació I2cat and Eurecom.
